Course Description

Based on the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Course Descriptions and Prerequisites. This course enables students to consolidate and continue developing their understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, coding, and financial literacy. Students solve problems, model real-life situations, use digital tools, communicate mathematical thinking, and apply mathematics in meaningful contexts.

Maple Ridge Academy Course Overview

Mathematics, Grade 9 is the foundation of secondary mathematics at Maple Ridge Academy. The course develops confidence, logical reasoning, and problem-solving through inquiry, collaboration, technology, and authentic applications. Students learn to think mathematically rather than simply memorize procedures. Throughout the course, they build the skills needed for success in Grade 10 mathematics and future university, college, apprenticeship, and workplace pathways.

Major Units of Study

  • Unit 1: Number Sense: Integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportional reasoning.
  • Unit 2: Algebra: Expressions, equations, patterns, variables and algebraic reasoning.
  • Unit 3: Linear Relations: Tables, graphs, equations and interpretation of linear relationships.
  • Unit 4: Measurement & Geometry: Area, perimeter, surface area, volume and geometric reasoning.
  • Unit 5: Data & Probability: Collecting, analyzing and interpreting data; probability investigations.
  • Unit 6: Coding & Mathematical Modelling: Using computational thinking and digital tools to solve problems.
  • Unit 7: Financial Literacy: Budgeting, simple interest, discounts, taxes and informed financial decisions.
