Course Description

Based on the Ontario Ministry of Education Computer Studies curriculum, this course develops students’ knowledge of computer science, programming, digital technologies, and computational thinking. Students learn through practical investigations, collaborative problem-solving, and authentic projects that mirror real-world technology environments. At Maple Ridge Academy, instruction emphasizes creativity, innovation, ethical technology use, and hands-on application. Learners design algorithms, write and test computer programs, analyze data, and develop digital solutions while strengthening critical thinking and communication skills. Modern programming tools, cloud-based resources, and project-based learning provide opportunities for students to work independently and collaboratively. The course also explores cybersecurity awareness, responsible digital citizenship, software design principles, and the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation. Students are encouraged to think like software developers by planning, debugging, documenting, and refining their work through continuous feedback. By the end of the course, students have developed confidence in solving complex problems, using technology responsibly, and applying computational thinking across a variety of academic and real-life contexts. This strong foundation prepares students for further study in computer science, engineering, business technology, information systems, and many other postsecondary pathways while fostering adaptable skills valued in today’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

Major Units of Study

Unit 1: Advanced Programming: Students develop practical knowledge and skills through guided instruction, hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and authentic projects that reinforce both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

Unit 2: Object-Oriented Design: Students develop practical knowledge and skills through guided instruction, hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and authentic projects that reinforce both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

Unit 3: Algorithms: Students develop practical knowledge and skills through guided instruction, hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and authentic projects that reinforce both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

Unit 4: Data Management: Students develop practical knowledge and skills through guided instruction, hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and authentic projects that reinforce both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

Unit 5: Software Engineering: Students develop practical knowledge and skills through guided instruction, hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and authentic projects that reinforce both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

Unit 6: Independent Application: Students develop practical knowledge and skills through guided instruction, hands-on activities, collaborative investigations, and authentic projects that reinforce both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

Assessment & Evaluation

Assessment follows Ontario’s Growing Success principles and includes diagnostic activities, assignments, coding exercises, quizzes, practical labs, projects, presentations, a culminating performance task, and a final evaluation.

Postsecondary Pathways

Prepares students for university, college, and careers in computer science, software development, cybersecurity, engineering, information technology, business analytics, and related fields.
